Corkbeg made the short journey to Midleton Cricket Field to play local rivals Midleton on a perfect Sunday morning for football.
Corkbeg started brightly and had an early free kick 40 yards out to test the Midleton defence. Up stepped Nicolas Janowski, who had one thing on his mind & smashed the ball against the underside of the bar and the home team managed to scramble the ball to safety.
Corkbeg were still on the front foot, but against the run of play a long ball found the Midleton striker looking suspiciously offside clean through on goal and slotted the ball past Mattie to score off the post. Back came the beg and we had a wonderful period of football and we’re still wondering how we didn’t score.
Midleton rode their luck and we had several chances blocked or cleared off the line. Midleton did manage only their second and last chance of the game, but Mattie O’Leary made a fine save tipping the ball onto the bar.
Corkbeg players and supporters then thought they had a strong claim for a penalty, when a strong run from Sean Crowley from his own half got him into the area, but a push from the Midleton centre half went unnoticed by the referee and a goal kick was given. 1-0 half time.
The second half started the same as the first with again the Beg trying to create the chances. The Beg got into good positions, but the final pass or shot let us down. Sean, Kieran and Scott all saw shots go wide of the mark. A competitive local derby which was largely dominated by the Beg and Midleton players were happy to hear the final whistle. Final score 1-0 to Magpies .
This team showed great spirit all through and would have at least deserved a point but that’s football!!
It will make the team stronger and the future is bright for this group of player’s if they maintain the same commitment as they showed in this game.
Special mention for Nicolas Janowski, Ewan Forbes & Fionn O’Sullivan.
Although everyone of them were brilliant on the day.
