FAI Visit To Corkbeg AFC – August 2018

What a fabulous afternoon in Whitegate! No sooner had the FAI contingent set foot inside the gates of our hallowed turf, the clouds overhead dispersed and glorious sunshine came bursting through for the duration of the visit. It was that kind of day.

The FAI were in Cork county celebrating their ‘’Festival Of Football’’ week and were paying a number of courtesy visits to clubs throughout Cork county. They rolled into Whitegate on August 13th to visit Corkbeg and a huge crowd turned out on a Monday afternoon to welcome them & cheer them on.

FAI Chief Executive John Delaney headed the group, with FAI President Tony Fitzgerald accompanying him. Also in attendance to meet the assembled throng, were former Irish internationals & Premier League stars Stephen Hunt & Stephen Kelly, current Irish womens internationals Amber Barrett & Cork City goalkeeper Amanda Budden and current Ireland U-19 manager Tom Mohan. And they were given a rapturous welcome. We were also delighted with the attendance of Cork AUL chairman Ted O Mahony & Cork AUL Secretary Martin Conlon.

The FAI contingent were given a tour of the facilities in Corkbeg and speeches were made by Tony Fitzgerald, John Delaney and Corkbeg chairman Jim Reaney. The FAI recognised the contribution of Terry Dunne towards football in East Cork and reminded the large crowd that Terry would be receiving an FAI Award for services to football at a gala dinner on the following Friday night in Cork City. They also presented Corkbeg AFC with a cheque for 5,000 euros to develop facilities in Whitegate, goalposts to replace the existing ones and a number of tickets for the schoolboys section to upcoming internationals.

FAI President Tony Fitzgerald presented Jim Reaney with a plaque to recognise the visit today and Corkbeg presented the FAI group with large baskets of Rostellan Chocolate. This may have been the highlight of the day, as 3 year old Tom Tom Cahill, who has twice beaten cancer, presented John Delaney with his basket of chocolate. Evan Crowley presented Tony Fitzgerald with the other basket. Corkbeg also used the occasion to launch their 50th anniversary commemorative booklet ”50 Shades Of Blue”……a brief history of Corkbeg AFC.

Thanks to Anthony Oosthuizen for the loan of the PA system on the day. Thanks to Flanagan Print for the signage, posters and the publication of our booklet in time for the visit. Big thanks to everybody who took out an advert in the booklet to allow us to keep costs down. Special mention for all our Academy volunteers, our own committee members and all who helped out during the visit, especially Karen Forbes, Martha Walsh & Mairead Ryan who served up refreshments to all.

And thanks to John Delaney and the FAI for their visit to Whitegate. WHAT A DAY!!!
